Medical Suspensions and Medical Review in Massachusetts
Medical suspensions are rarely about whether someone is a careful driver. They are about whether specific documentation satisfies a specific standard.

How medical review arises
A medical or vision question can reach the Registry through a provider report, a self-reported condition on an application or renewal, information following a crash or incident, a report from another agency, or a routine requirement attached to a particular condition.
Many drivers are unaware a question has been raised until a notice arrives.
What the process commonly involves
Medical review generally centres on documentation: a provider's assessment of the condition, how it is managed, and whether it affects the ability to drive safely. Vision matters have their own standards and their own forms.
What makes these cases difficult is rarely the medicine. It is that the documentation submitted often does not answer the question that was actually asked — it confirms a diagnosis when what was needed was an assessment of function, or vice versa.
Documents and information you may need
Commonly: the notice and any forms it references, a statement or completed form from the treating provider, records of treatment or management of the condition, vision examination results where vision is at issue, and your driving record.
Where the Registry has supplied a specific form, that form is usually what it wants. Substituting a provider's own letter frequently delays things.
Typical next steps
Read the notice closely and identify the precise question being asked; identify who is qualified to answer it; obtain the correct form if one is specified; give your provider enough context to answer the actual question; submit complete documentation; and prepare for a hearing if one is scheduled.
How Driver Support Club can help
We help you interpret the notice, identify which forms and documentation appear to be required, organize what you gather, and prepare for any hearing.
We do not give medical advice, complete medical forms, or influence what a provider writes. Those are your provider's professional judgement, and they should be.
Common questions
Who completes the medical paperwork?
Your treating provider. We can help you understand which form is needed and what question it is meant to answer, but the clinical content is theirs.
Can a medical suspension be resolved without a hearing?
Sometimes, depending on the matter and whether the documentation resolves the concern. Other situations involve a hearing.
My condition is managed. Is that enough?
It may be, but it generally has to be documented in terms that address the Registry's specific question rather than stated generally.
Do you see my medical records?
Only what you choose to share, and only where it is needed to help you organize a submission. Do not send sensitive records through the website forms.
